The reggae community has lost a true original. Owen Lennox Moncrieffe, known to the world as Fantan Mojah, has passed away at the age of 49. He has risen to take his seat alongside the Most High, leaving behind a body of work that will stand the test of time.

For those of us who followed his journey, Fantan was a titan of conscious music. He gave us true anthems—songs that didn’t just top the charts, but anchored our souls. Tracks like Hail the King, Rasta Got Soul, and Build Great Man are more than just records; they are psalms of the struggle that reminded us all of the power of the message.

My connection to his music goes beyond just being a fan. Years ago, my friend Black Russian performed a show with Fantan. Unknown to me, he returned from that show with a gift: a personal radio drop Fantan had recorded for me. Without hesitation, the “Big Man” himself took the time to speak for me, lending his voice to the work I was doing. That gesture was an immense honor, and it became the cornerstone of my tribute mix, Fantan Mojah: A Blessed Mix.

That mix went on to reach over 300,000 listeners. While the digital systems of this world eventually stepped in to claim the music through copyright blocks—ironically preventing Fantan from receiving the earnings that his work rightfully generated—the spirit of the project remained untainted.

The legacy of these songs is reflected in the voices of the people who listened. Looking back at the 52 comments left on the original mix, the sentiment is consistent and deeply moving: fans from all corners of the world described his music as “the height of culture,” “psalms of the struggle,” and an “amazing fresh” sound that they will never get sick of hearing. There is a palpable sense of community in those comments—a shared, generous vibe of “One Love” and “Jah Bless” that proves his music wasn’t just heard; it was felt.

Fantan, thank you for the anthems, the inspiration, and for that moment of kindness you showed me. It was a true honor to help push your music to the world.

Rest in power, King. One love to one and all.
