Snow White and the dubious title we couldn’t finish.
You just couldn’t make it up could you ? So I did.
If Netenflixen (is my german bad?) made a version of Snow White, Snow White would possibly be a beautiful angry tanned hispanic lady (I know, not all hispanic ladies are angry, just the angry ones) and the dwarves would be 7 ft tall, retired jewish coal miners from Peruvian and Pakistani decent. I’m literally making this up as I go along and I love people from all races and places so good luck saying any of this is intent on being racist. And there would be a guest star appearance of Ikumak Jones (brother of Alas Smith and Jones), the eskimo descendent to play Bob Marley who sits on a log strumming a guitar singing a rendition of “milkshake” by Kelis.
I guess my point that drives this nonsense, which it exactly happens to be, is that you just can’t plan a recreation from a world of talent and change any narrative. Unless the narrative is intended to be changed and that is something the audience would be happy (not to mention comfortable) to see.
Peter Andre (how you doin Pete, you ok lad ?) just played the main roll in JAFAICAN and the name to me says it all. Heck, I am a white man who loves and adores reggae music so naturally over time some of the cultural aspects have become part of who I am.
Tippa Irie (Hope you are well Tippa, we don’t know each other but we have met a couple times over the years and your music has indeed been part of my collection and played many many times) just posted on fraudbook saying it was a brilliant film.
Here on now, you can see there is culturally appropriate and not.
A black man playing Doctor Who has failed. I have no interest and never did, in the Dr and his deceptively small tardis. But is it really wrong for it to fail ? I don’t believe a white man could play Bob Marley. A black man playing James Bond ? is as wrong as a woman playing James Bond. These points aren’t new.
But why do people want to force these things on us ? And why can’t they make a character who succeeds James Bond (ficticiously of course) and let that character be the type of person they want ?
For many of us, it’s not about being racist, it’s about correct portrayal.
White people can be saying “I don’t want to watch black doctor who” and that of course sounds racist.
Black people can be saying “I don’t want a white man playing Bob Marley” and that sounds so too.
But neither are racist.
So what about in a country that is predominantly white or black (or asian) and they decide they love something so much, they would like to re-enact it ? You see that would never be culturally inappropriate. It would be done out of love and therefore respect.
What about deeper darker histories ? I dunno. That’s where the love kinda drops out and the horror of real life histories and appropriations become something to discuss and question before doing something or committing to do something.
All I know is, a yardie version of a snow white and the 6 lil guy dem, if written directed and cast well, could be funny you **ck.
Anyway, peace and love to everyone, no matter who you are. The truth is the truth and love is the answer.
